HAWK-EYE Firefly 7S with 2-inch LCD

HAWK-EYE Aerial Video Technology is known for it’s ultra vivid cameras with GYRO image stabilization. The Firefly 7S 4K FPV action sports camera camcorder is the latest entry into the market with a 2 inch LCD screen. This comes as a nice surprise, following suit the recent Mobius-looking Q6 camera that is taking the market by storm this month. With the LCD screen, it allows you to see what you are filming; at times you only get one chance on a shot, and not seeing what you are filming, can be a  disappointment if you missed that only shot.

HAWK-EYE Aerial Video Technology series of cameras took the challenge to GoPro with a third of the price, putting GoPro in a tough spot. This round, a new challenger to it’s rival, Git2.  ■ by dronemission.com

AOMWAY FPV 200mW 700TVL AV Transmitter

If you are looking for a quick way to view the world from the sky, the Aomway Mini video transmitter packs 200mW of ultra clean 5.8GHz power in a micro sized video/audio package integrated with a 700 TVL camera.  That’s right Plug N Play FPV! and at 19 grams!  ■ by dronemission.com

First Impression,  love the fact that it is plug and play.  Easy to use, just deciding how you want to power this FPV gear is the only challenge you may have or maybe not.  It comes pre-wired with a standard JST battery plug, allowing you to use any battery type, not limiting to AA or LiPo.

User Segment
Beginners, Park Flyers, Plug N Play, Budget $52 (source: Aug 2016 Banggood)

What To Expect

The AOMWAY FPV 200mW 700TVL can get hot with a 3s LiPo.  We had tested it with a 2s and 3s LiPo with no issues. It did not broadcast any sound during our test.  The stock range at 200 mW is 1.2km and by changing the antennas on both ends, you can reached upto 3 km.  There seem to be distinctive vertical lines appearing on the broadcast.

Camera

The camera is a 700 TVL camera, with a 170 degree field of view.  The focus range 6 feet +, does not focus well at closeup.  See video for results.

Things you might need to know

  • Input voltage 6-28V
  • Powering plug is JST
  • Antenna connector is a SMA, if you use to use your own
  • Weight is 19g without the antenna

Eleven Hobby F8F Bearcat 1100mm

Lots of buzz about the Eleven Hobby Bearcat F8F recently.  The Bearcat has always been a favorite warbird but few models have been made for it.  Bearcat F8F is one of the best looking and famous wings that served the US Navy.  It was designed primarily as an interceptor-fighter and this model is docile yet commanding presence in the air. It arrived today, tight, protected and double boxed.  For those who are still guessing who is Eleven Hobby, their recent T-28 was very well received. It comes as no surprise to some, as Eleven Hobby shares it’s affiliation with FMS, a leading manufacturer of RC Planes.       ■ by dronemission.com

First Impression,  the Eleven Hobby Bearcat F8F asssembly was easy and fast, the cuts are precise and snugly fitted, bolt down the wings and horizontal stabiliser with 6 screws and the rest is adding your receiver and programming your radio.  Wingspan is a perfect 1100mm (43.3in) that fits into a typical car boot (trunk).  Optional gluing needed, if you plan to add the wing cannons.

Radiolink CP620 750W 30A Hybrid Balance Charger

There are over a hundred lithium polymer (LiPo) battery balance chargers in the market, but not much has changed for a while, the same user interface and the same programming codes reused.   Radiolink is among the few that has taken the lead to change electric radio control (RC) with the CP620 hybrid charger and rethinking how to improve efficiency and low consumption in todays RC  ■ by dronemission.com

radiolink-cp620.jpg

First Impression,  an interesting charge methodology.  The CP620 starts charging through the main power cable with the maximum 30A in series at the suitable charge rate, once any cell is fully charged, it will then automatically changed to the independent balance charge mode charging through the balance port.  This increases the charge efficiency.  With a charge current of 30A, you have a maximum current of 6A for each cell to optimize the charge.

ZEROTECH Dobby Pocket Selfie Drone

The highly anticipated DOBBY is here and in our lab, compact and optimized for photography, taking pictures by voice control and gesture control, assisting users to capture the perfect selfie “Kodak” moment of this generation.

DOBBY Pocket Drone is an AI-powered drone using Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, piloted with GPS and GLONASS, featuring object tracking and facial recognition. DOBBY can take off by voice control and one click on APP. Selfie lovers can enjoy creative photos from unique perspectives rather than taken by other shooting tools like cell phone cameras.

If you are into smartphone technology Qualcomm comes to mind; anyone who uses Wechat or QQ knows what Tencent can do.  Known to few, the two giant firms are among the core influence to bring ZEROTECH to the limelight with Dobby. However with all that investment backers and publicity behind it, there seem to be an underlying issues uncovered as we take it for several tests.

donbby-target.PNG

First Impression
The highly anticipated crowd funded DOBBY quadcopter is here.   The DOBBY Pocket Drone came in a familiar box looking like an Apple product.  Very elegant indeed.  In the box, you will find a folded quadcopter, a size of a smart phone.  Included is a USB charger,  usb adapter, a proprietary smart battery,  basic instructions and warranty card.

What I have found is you may need to use the USB charger provided, as a generic charger may not feed enough power.  You can tell by looking at the light, if it does not turn orange while fast charging.  The battery last just about 7 minutes or less in flight.   You can check the battery status by pressing the status button.

Video and photos are recorded directly on to Dobby internal memory storage (no SD card needed), I believe about 9 GB of free space.  It is viewable when connected and can be downloaded on to your device. Video and photos are sharp and crisp I must say.  Videos have a jello movement to it, due to amount of vibration generated by the hinged propellers.  The best way to transfer your video and photos to your computer is to attach the USB cable with the adapter and connect your Dobby to a computer.  A new USB device will be detected and a new drive will be assigned, where you can just drag and drop your files over to your computer.

Before each flight, you begin by extending the arms, it locks in when fully extended.  You then adjust the camera angle manually.  They lock in to each fixed angle to match the app image stabilization.  45 degrees is required if you plan to use the Follow Me Target feature.  You can have the camera face directly down for a full unobstructed aerial view.

At the current moment 720P is all I can record, but my understanding resolution should be higher.

The camera orientation is default to selfie, face to head, so careful with it, the quadcopter will be flying reverse.  You can change it to Face to Tail, the more convectional way of flying RC.

You can see here, the Optical Flow and ultrasonic sensor, which helps with position hold, palm take-off and palm landing.  The ultrasonic emits a sound wave that the human ear is unable to detect, but may be sensitive to some animals, so keep your pets away.

The firmware and guide has just been released after several months.  Make sure to update your Do.Fun app which will then prompt you to update the latest firmware.  The latest user guide can be found within the Do.Fun app.

User Segment
Selfie Addicts, Beginners, Park Flyers, Ready To Fly, Off the shelves, Collectors, Budget $409 (source: August 2016 Banggood Price Check)

What to Expect

The Dobby has difficulty picking gps signal indoors, not that we recommend that anyone fly indoors.  In novice mode it will not take off without 7 gps count.  We suggest that you fly outdoors as it is too hazardess indoor, besides the optical flow sensor requires sufficient light to work properly.

It is a selfie drone, so careful to face the camera to yourself, or you will find yourself flying in reversed.  Remember the camera is on the tail end of the quadcopter.

It is clear that Zerotech had release the product prior to the functionality being complete.  The App was updated late August 2016 to support some of the functions promised, but seem to require more testing to be comfortably certain it works.

Target function requires the Dobby to be over 5m function.  It does seem to recognize it is over 5 meters.
The flip function is always saying “low power, cannot use this function”
The Face recognition says “coming Soon”
The return home seem to be 6+ feet away
